Thorold Blackhawk goalie Chase Grsic gave the team a chance to steal a win from the first-place Caledonia Corvairs last night in Thorold, but it was not to be.
Grsic kicked out 36 shots and the Hawks were trailing by only one goal with a minute to go before Caledonia tallied an empty net goal to take the 4-2 win.
The game was close all night despite the Corvairs outshooting the Hawks by a 40-18 margin.
In the first period Sam VanderZalm gave Thorold an early lead before Matthew Bridgwater and Colt Corpse gave Caledonia a 2-1 lead heading into the dressing room.
The second period was scoreless but in the third frame Nick Giunta gave the Corvairs a 3-1 lead before VanderZalm scored again to pull the Hawks to within one.
It stayed that way until the final minute, when Giunta added the empty-netter to seal the win.
The Corvairs sit on top of the Golden Horseshoe Conference with 37 points on the strength of 18 wins and only one loss. They also have the best record in the GOJHL league. Thorold remains tied for fourth with St. Catharines at 25 points, with a record of 11 wins, 7 losses and two ties.
The Hawks travel to Niagara Falls for a game tonight before returning home on Thursday, Nov. 14 for a game versus Pelham. Game time is 7:07 p.m.
