Four-goal lead evaporates for Hawks

Second half proves to be different game

It was a heartbreaker at the Thorold Arena last night as the Hawks couldn't hold onto a four-goal lead over the league-leading Caledonia Corvairs in Jr. B hockey.

Thorold played well in the first period, jumping out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of goals by Sam VanderZalm, Dylan Scriver and Cam Lightfoot.

Chase Grsic blocked 16 shots in the first frame and Thorold went to the dressing room with the lead.

In the second period Thorold added a fourth goal by Mario Zitelli before Caledonia finally woke up.

They scored five straight goals to prove why they are dominating the GOJHL. Joel Mazzilli scored a hat trick for the Corvairs with one goal in the second period and two more in the third. Singles came from Noah Caperchione and Ryan Wells.

Caledonia outshot Thorold 31-21 in the game and Corvairs goalie Aidan Hughes got the win.

The game's three stars were Mazzilli, Ryan Littlejohn of Caledonia and Lightfoot for the Hawks.

Thorold's next home game is Thursday, Dec. 12, with a 7:07 p.m. start.
