Laura Condotta of the Brock women’s volleyball team was named Player of the Year on Monday.

Condotta, a fourth-year outsider hitter from Etobicoke, was named the OUA West Division’s top player after becoming one of the most fearsome hitters in the province.

Senior outside hitter Darby Taylor (Thorold, Ontario) was named a second-team all star and middle Jaimie Holland (Whitby, Ont) was named to the OUA all-rookie team.

Condotta posted a total of 245 kills on the year, which was good for fifth in the OUA (3.50 per set) and ninth in the country.

“I can’t say enough about Laura. It’s my first year working with her and she improved her serving, her blocking and widened her shot selection on offence, and was a great leader,” said first-year Badgers head coach Steve Delaney. “She really came into her own as to becoming the go-to person on the court for us. We’re lucky to have her back next year. I know she’s going to be playing a lot of beach volleyball in the summer, which should only help her game. She’s a fantastic player to watch and a better person to be around.”

Condotta is also a member of the Team Ontario Beach Volleyball squad and has represented Team Canada at multiple events. She registered 3.29 digs per set and 0.41 service aces per set, and as the focal point of the Badgers’ offence, has earned a sizzling 4.1 points per set as well (fifth in OUA).

Holland, a first-year Medical Sciences student, finished fourth in the OUA in blocks per set (0.88).

“Jaimie Holland was huge for us this year, especially when we had key injuries at different points of the seasons,” said Delaney. “She took over at the net in specific situations and came up with some crucial blocks and key serving runs as well as providing some pizzazz on offence when we needed it. It’s great to see her come in and make such a big contribution in her first season.”

In 15 games, Taylor finished second on the Badgers with a total of 126 kills (2.29 kills per set) and finished ninth with a .251 kill efficiency.

“Darby probably would have been a first-team all star if she was healthy all season long,” said Delaney. “Potentially, an all-Canadian athlete. Her ability to see the block is fantastic. She has a great arm and teams have issue handling her serve. There’s a possibility that she’ll come back next season for her Masters, so the future is bright on the Right Side for Brock volleyball.”
