The Welland Canal will be quiet for a few months after the St Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation closed the locks after an extended season.

On Friday the last ship passed through the locks, marking a season that the corporation said was around 10 percent busier than a normal year.

The increase was in part due to shipping of iron ore and grain, said the company.

The canal is slated for reopening this spring.
