Week-long activities to celebrate Waste Reduction Week

Public tours and information booth part of awareness campaign next week

Waste Reduction Week is a national environmental campaign which builds awareness around sustainable and responsible consumption, and promotes actions to divert more waste from disposal and conserve natural resources. Niagara Region, in recognition of Waste Reduction Week, will be offering free public tours, hosting an information booth and holding a contest to inform residents about the importance of waste reduction. Tours are free of charge; however, reservations are required to participate in the tours and space is limited.

Recycling Centre Tour – Wednesday, Oct. 23 and Friday, Oct. 25 at 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.

Join Niagara Region and Niagara Recycling for a 45-minute guided tour of Niagara Region’s Recycling Centre. Learn first-hand about the machines, processes and people that sort, bale and ship your recyclables. For safety reasons, closed toed shoes and long pants are required. Individuals must be 10 years of age or older and be able to walk a flight of stairs to participate.

Participants can reserve their spaces for the tour by calling the Region’s Waste Info-Line at 905-356-4141 or 1-800-594-5542 Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please sign up before Friday, Oct. 18 to secure your spot.

Walker Environmental Compost Facility Tour – Monday, Oct. 21, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Tour begins at Regional Headquarters Campbell West Entrance at 1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way, Thorold.

Learn how your Green Bin material is turned into a high-quality compost through a guided bus tour of Walker Environmental Group’s Compost Facility. Participants are to meet the bus at Regional Headquarters Campbell West Entrance where parking is available for visitors.

Participants can reserve their spaces for the tour by calling the Region’s Waste Info-Line at 905-356-4141 or 1-800-594-5542 Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please sign up before Friday, Oct. 18 to secure your spot.

Waste Reduction Day Waste Management Information Booths:
Niagara Region waste management staff will be available to provide information and answer questions on a variety of waste management programs in the Niagara region. Additionally, staff will be selling Blue Boxes ($6), Grey Boxes ($6), Green Bins ($17) and Kitchen Catchers ($4). Look for our team at the following locations:

Monday, Oct. 21, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Grimsby Public Library – 18 Carnegie Lane, Grimsby

Wednesday, Oct. 23, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Niagara Falls Public Library, MacBain Community Centre – 7150 Montrose Rd., Niagara Falls

Friday, Oct. 25, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Seaway Mall - 800 Niagara St., Welland

‘Reuse Your Goods’ Contest Draw – Monday, Oct. 21 – Saturday, Oct. 26
Niagara Region, in partnership with Grimsby Benevolent Fund and Goodwill Niagara, encourage residents to reduce their waste through the donation of re-useable goods. Donate a reusable item at the Niagara Road 12 or Humberstone Reusable Goods Drop-off depot from Oct. 21-26 and receive a ballot to enter a draw to win a $50 Visa gift card. Acceptable donations are at the discretion of the attendant. Goodwill Niagara is currently experiencing a high demand for clothing.

(This contest is not open to employees of Niagara Region).

Niagara Road 12 Landfill hours of operation are Tuesday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday-Monday closed.

Humberstone Landfill hours of operation are Monday – Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday closed.
