Thorold Regional Councillor seeks re-election

Tim Whalen hopes to serve another four years as Regional Councillor; 'We got a lot going on in the region and I just want to see things through for the betterment of Thorold'

Thorold Regional Councillor Tim Whalen has announced that he’s seeking re-election.

“We got a lot going on in the region and I just want to see things through for the betterment of Thorold,” says Councillor Whalen, in an interview with ThoroldToday.

Whalen, who is the CEO of the Thorold Community Credit Union, was first elected as a Thorold City Councillor back in 2003, where he served four terms, including a term as Deputy Mayor.

During his four-year tenure as a Regional Councillor, Whalen has been a part of and chaired many different regional committees such as Regional Procurement, the Regional Corporate Service Committee, and the Regional Budget Committee.

“It’s sure been busy,” Whalen says. “Right now we got the new regional transit. I sit as the Thorold representative on that committee. It’s just taking off, we’re getting everything underway. There’s a lot of rural Thorold areas, such as Port Robinson and Allanburg, that are underserved right now until there’s decent transportation going forward.”

The past four years have already seen a positive change on the regional level, according to Whalen.

“If you see what the region was like four years ago when I first got elected to what it is today—it’s open to transparency again,” he says. “We got some credibility back in the region which we’re just expanding going forward.”

Whalen's work in financial management has helped him as a Regional Councillor.

“Most [regional] committees have something to do with finance,” Whalen says. “It’s helped me quite a bit in the last four years and I’m hopefully looking forward to another four.”

Thorold needs regional support as it is growing at such a fast pace, says Whalen.

“Things are booming in Thorold,” he says. “Especially because we’re the fastest-growing municipality in Niagara. Things are really rolling along in Thorold and we just keep going. The sky is the limit as it stands right now.”
