Thorold Fish & Chips reopens under new ownership

'We’re going back to basics,' says new owner Dale Patterson whose parents had a fish and chips restaurant in the same location many years ago

After changing hands earlier this month, Thorold Fish & Chips on Front St. N has reopened.

New owners Dale and Virginia Patterson want to offer a classic fish and chips experience.

The endeavour feels personal to the couple as Dale’s parents used to own a fish and chips restaurant in the same location, called Solitude’s Cafe.

“We both worked here at one point in time so it’s always been a place that we liked,” says Dale Patterson, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “It came up and we decided to give it a try.”

The restaurant will offer authentic fish and chips.

“We’re going back to basics,” says Patterson. “Not fish and chips and all kinds of other stuff, just a basic fish and chips restaurant and the food that goes with it," such as homemade french fries and coleslaw.

For the fish batter, the couple will rely on a tried and true family recipe.

“We’re going to try and go back to the old batter,” Patterson says. “You don’t want it too thick and you don’t want it too soggy.”

There will be four different types of fish on offer.

“We have the pollock, the cod, the haddock and the halibut,” Patterson says. “I feel haddock is probably one of the more popular ones. Myself, I like halibut.”

The Pattersons have been hard at work these last few weeks to get the restaurant ready in time for the reopening. The place has been given a new lick of paint, and some of the equipment has been upgraded.

The couple can't wait to officially open tomorrow.

“We just want to provide good food and be extremely busy,” says Patterson. “We can both remember on Friday nights when this place was lined up out on the street. We’re kind of hoping that will happen again.”

Thorold Fish & Chips is located at 46 Front St. N.
