Thorold Fire and Emergency Services has partnered with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and Country 89 on the upcoming 12 Days of Holiday Fire & Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety campaign.

For the twelve days leading up to Christmas, in alignment with the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal, a daily holiday safety message will be read on air. Listeners will have the opportunity to win a prize by calling in and repeating the holiday safety message.

“We are excited to be partnering with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council and Country 89 on such an important and educational campaign,” says Vince Giovannini, captain of fire prevention. “The holidays are an important time to spend with family, loved ones and friends. Don’t let a potential tragedy ruin your holidays. The 12 Days of Holiday Fire & CO Safety campaign helps us engage with residents to remind them of quick and easy tips to be safe this holiday season.”

The campaign aims to help the Ontario public prevent fire and CO related tragedies over the holidays. Municipal fire departments and radio stations across the province will be participating and there will be over 1000 daily prize packages to be won.

“We are proud to work with the Ontario Fire Service, including Thorold Fire and Emergency Services, and radio stations across the province to help educate the public on fire prevention and safety during the holiday season,” says Jamie Kovacs, executive director of Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council.

As we approach the holidays and the twelve day safety campaign, residents are reminded of these tips:

  • Always stay in the kitchen when something is cooking on the stove
  • Place lit candles away from anything that can burn and out of reach of children and pets
  • Drink responsibly. Attempting to cook or smoke while under the influence of alcohol is often a contributing factor in fatal fires
  • Make sure the base of real Christmas trees are immersed in water at all times to prevent them from getting too dry
  • Check all sets of decorative lights before putting them up and discard any sets that are damaged
  • Develop and practice a home fire escape plan so that everyone in your home knows what to do if the smoke or CO alarms sound

Thorold Fire and Emergency Services reminds residents to maintain working smoke and CO alarms in their homes. Smoke alarms should be on every level of a home, while CO alarms are required to be outside all bedrooms. Smoke and CO alarms should be tested on a monthly basis.
