The Thorold Community Credit Union Thorold Anchors are getting ready to kick off their new season on Thursday, May 11 at George Taylor Field in St. Catharines.
“We’re almost there,” says the Team’s manager Aaron McInnis, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “Everyone has been coming together like a team, getting ready for the season. We’re excited about the things to come.”
Six new players are joining the Anchors this season and the group has been training hard since the start of February.
“The Thorold Anchors team holds itself to a standard,” McInnis says. “It has its own vibe and I think that these guys have just gelled right into that vibe and everybody’s ready to come out for the beginning of the season as teammates.”
Meanwhile, the City of Thorold is getting the diamond at McMillan Park ready for the home opener on Tuesday, May 23.
Recently, Thorold City Council approved an upgrade of the fencing and batting cages at the park — which should be ready to go by mid-May.
“It’s nice to see the City focused on the ballpark,” says McInnis. “Upgrades are always great. They’re good for everybody that uses the field.”
Last fall, the Anchors won the OBA Senior ‘C’ Championship and the pressure is on to perform this season.
“I think that’s going to give us a big push,” McInnis says. “They’re going to be a little more prepared to play against us. On top of that we’re going to have be even more prepared to play against them.”
When it comes to strategy, the team is going to keep putting emphasis on what works for them.
“These guys have got it under control,” McInnis says. “They have a common goal and that is to be successful and to have fun playing baseball. I don’t think there’s much to be changed there. We’re just going to let these guys do their thing and I expect good things out of them.”
The home opener will be a very special night for the Anchors, according to McInnis.
“There’s going to be an opening ceremony and we’re going to put up the OBA banner,” he says. “There’s also two retiring ceremony games coming up this year and we’ll be putting up the banners of the retiring numbers.”
McInnis hopes to see the community once again come out in droves this season.
“It’s a great way to spend your Tuesday nights and a few select Thursdays this year,” he says. “They should expect to see Anchors baseball: a group of guys that come together and play for their city and have a lot of fun out there. It’s a good time at the ballpark cheering the Anchors on.”
The season opener will take place on Thursday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m at George Taylor Field in St. Catharines.
