Sweet charity at St. John's Church

St. Johns helps community and solves Christmas baking dilemma

Christmas is the perfect time for overindulgence and giving, and the St. John's Anglican Church Festive Cookie Christmas Sale is the perfect place to do both.

Reverend Kathy Morgan explained the funds raised help support the Rectors discretionary fund.

"I can use the funds to help people who might need some assistance both within the congregation and outside the parish in the general community," she told ThoroldNews.

The event is organized by Barb Bowman, her daughter Lisa and Beth Harwood.

"We ask the congregation to bring in their baked goods. They are usually decorated for the season. Besides being a fundraiser, the event helps people with their Christmas baking," said Lisa.

Besides the contribution from the church membership, the younger Bowman said the effort includes help from between 15 and 20 volunteers.

Patrons make up their own box of selected cookies from the dozens of varieties contributed by the congregation. Before the doors opened at 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon, there was a lineup outside in anticipation of the popular Christmas event. Those in attendance could make small donation and enjoy some of the baked goods along with coffee and tea.
