Plummeting temperatures and snowstorms that cancelled buses resulted in sparse student attendance at Niagara schools last week.

About 45 per cent of Prince of Wales students managed to make it to school, and after spending some time studying math, reading, music and physical education, they were asked to channel their creativity toward designing special Valentines for Canadian disabled veterans.

Principal Susan Lawrence, whose husband and son are both veterans, spearheaded the heartfelt school project to remind students that “Remembrance Day is not just one day,” she stated.

“They are facing a lot of mental health and rehabilitation issues,” added Lawrence, who made sure the cheery cards were dropped in the mail Friday night.

Each month, the school encourages students to focus on a specific positive character trait, and she decided that sending Valentines would be a great way to reinforce the character education trait of caring for the month of February.
