The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has awarded Niagara Region a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2023 budget document.
The award, which was presented to the Financial Management and Planning Division, recognizes Niagara Region’s efforts to deliver high-quality budget documents that improve transparency and inform residents, according to a news release.
"This is the 11th consecutive year that the Region has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award," said Commissioner of Corporate Services and Treasurer Todd Harrison. "I am proud of the recognition bestowed on the Region’s finance team. Our continued success speaks to their dedication to best practices in financial planning, reporting and transparency. It is also a testament to the collaboration and good working relationship between our team, staff throughout the organization and Council."
The award represents a significant achievement by the Region. To receive the budget award, the Regional municipality met nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget communications, the release said. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an organization's budget serves as:
- A policy document
- A financial plan
- An operations guide; and
- A communications device
“I want to congratulate the Financial Management and Planning Department for yet again receiving this highest award in governmental budgeting. This achievement reflects Niagara Region’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting and demonstrates how Regional staff continue to work towards the highest standards in finance and budgeting," said Regional Chair Jim Bradley.
The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is the highest award in governmental budgeting, the release said.
