Today, Niagara Place officially opened with the announcement of a $250,000 Operating stream grant to the Niagara 2022 Host Society from the Community Building Fund administered by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Niagara Place will serve as a free daily festival hub for the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games over the next two weeks — providing attendees with activations celebrating the region’s culture and history through daily programming featuring live music, art exhibits, and elements of Niagara’s culinary scene. Niagara Place also has activation spaces for Indigenous and Francophone communities.

“It is with such pride that I congratulate the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games on receiving the Government of Ontario's Community Building Fund grant,” said Jennie Stevens, Member of Provincial Parliament for the City of St. Catharines. “The Games have allowed for new building development, job creation, and volunteer opportunities. The athletes competing at the facilities across the Niagara Region will leave a legacy of sportsmanship and athleticism, sparking interest and drive among the youth in our community. The facilities built for the 2022 Canada Summer Games are top-tier, environmentally conscious, and will continue to be spaces for our communities to gather, play, complete, and reflect. Congratulations to the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games!”

The Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games, with a $250,000 Community Building Fund – Operating Stream Grant over the past 12 months, has continued operating facilities and delivering experiences and programs for Ontarians by recalling full-time staff to deliver hybrid programming, upgrading equipment in alignment with health and safety protocols, and supporting general operating expenses.

“We would like to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation for this incredibly generous grant,” said Doug Hamilton, Board Chair of the Niagara 2022 Host Society. “With their support, the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games will be a once-in-a-lifetime event that brings residents from across the country together in the Niagara Region for an incredible celebration of Canada’s sport, arts, culture and community. The Games will undoubtedly be a great legacy to the Niagara Region for years to come — an outcome that was only reinforced by the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s generosity.”

Held every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games are the country’s marquee event for amateur sport representing the highest level of national competition for thousands of up-and-coming Canadian athletes. The 28th edition of the Canada Games will mark just the third occasion in the event’s history that it will have taken place in the province of Ontario and the first time in 21 years.

In total, more than 5,000 participants and close to 4,500 volunteers are expected to take part in the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games scheduled for August 6-21. The 2022 Games will take place at 19 different venues across the Niagara Region and feature 18 different sports, including an inaugural rugby sevens competition and the return of lacrosse after a 37-year absence from the Games.

Tickets for this summer’s Games are currently available for purchase online.
