The City of Thorold is preparing to award a lucrative contract to a Port Colborne-based construction firm for the construction of a new park in the city.

A staff report is recommending that Stolk Construction gets the job of developing the Merritt Meadows Neighbourhoods Park, located at the north entrance to the subdivision on the west side of Eastman Gateway. The parkland has been dedicated in the subdivision plan, but has not yet been developed.

The planned design for the park includes the installation of playground equipment, rubber safety surface, concrete walkway, benches, signage, and drainage for the playground. ‘Other amenities can be included in the future once additional funding is provided,’ the report says.

The entire project will cost the city $411,300, including a $10,000 staff inspection and project management fee. Funding in the amount of $250,000 was approved in the 2022 Capital Budget for this project. In order to offset the funding shortfall, staff are recommending that additional funding in the amount of $151,300 be reallocated from forecasted parks projects included in the Development Charges study but not yet included in the capital budget.

The park is slated to be completed in September.
