The Thorold jail is one of a long list of correctional facilities in southern Ontario that will be receiving more staff after the province announced it is hiring 89 new correctional officers.

According to a news release from the Solicitor General, 27 graduates will be assigned to the Central Region, where Thorold jail is grouped together with Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre, Maplehurst Correctional Complex, and Vanier Centre for Women. Other regions will be receiving graduates too, as part of a $500-million commitment from the province to transform correctional services.

Graduates completed eight weeks of in-person and virtual training which included job-specific case studies and scenario-based learning with a focus on de-escalation and communications skills.

"This approach builds critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, so graduates are better equipped to quickly respond to real-life situations," said the solicitor general's office.

"The program also provides ongoing sensitivity training on Indigenous cultural, anti-Black racism and inmate management techniques."
