Food drive tomorrow at Friends of the Beaverdams Church

The group restoring Beaverdams Church wants to give back with a food drive on Dec. 3; 'Hopefully that’s a good way to start the [Christmas] season'

To thank the local community for their continued support with the ongoing restoration of Beaverdams Church on Marlatts Rd, the ‘Friends of the Beaverdams Church’ are putting on a food drive for Community Care on Saturday.

“We’ve done it every year for the last five to six years,” explains group member Donna Cowan, in an interview with ThoroldToday. “We invite anybody to come up. We park a truck in front of the church and people can drop in their goods. We want to give back to the community because they’ve been very good to help us restore this building.”

At the event, people will be able to get a little sneak preview of how the restoration is coming along.

“It’s going to be an outside event but they’ll be able to peek inside,” says Cowan. “It’s coming along very well. As a matter of fact, the dry walling is complete, the rewiring is complete. While we can’t go inside, you can pull in the entrance way and peek in.”

There’s much more that needs to be done before the building can officially reopen.

“We’re looking forward to spring,” Cowan says. “The next project is to get the place painted and hopefully after that our aim is to look after the washroom situation. We have to figure out how we’re going to deal with that.”

Cowan hopes that the building will once again take an important place in the local community once it’s finished.

“We’re hoping to be able to re-purpose and use it as a community building,” she says. “It’ll be used for small art shows, craft shows, we can do a Christmas market up there. We figure that we can probably rent it out for small social gatherings and it can be used for small concerts. It’s going to have a community purpose and people will be able to rent it for weddings of course.”

During the food drive, hot chocolate will be provided and there will also be a wreath hanging ceremony followed by some carol singing.

“At 1:30 [p.m.] the town crier is going to call everybody to order,” Cowan says. “We have two doors on that church so It’ll be two wreaths that will be hung. Then we have a carol sing.  We have some rhythm instruments and we sing a few carols and wish each other a merry Christmas. Hopefully that’s a good way to start the season.”

The food drive takes place outside of Beaverdams Church on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 1:00 p.m. The wreath hanging ceremony and carolling will take place at 1:30 p.m.
