Thorold's first legal weed store opened its doors this week, ahead of its announced '4/20'-launch date. The Pine St Plaza saw frequent traffic as customers pulled in to shop at Takeoff Cannabis's new location.

"We decided to open up a bit early as a soft opening since in-store shopping isn't allowed," said owner and operator Bret Unger.

"Things have been amazing, to say the least, we have had an overwhelming turnout and have been serving tens of dozens of satisfied and happy customers so far over the last few days."

Unger said the store already had seen customers coming back, and said he was hoping to soon be able to open up the doors to his shop fully when regulations allow for that to happen. The shop currently only serves its customers at the door through curbside pickup or same-day delivery.

Following Takeoff Cannabis establishment in town, Grand Cannabis on Keefer Road also settled in the locality within the past year.

According to business data, legal cannabis grossed $2.6 million in Canada last year, with an anticipated increase in 2021 as several consumer- and advocacy groups are noting increased consumption during the pandemic.
