ST. CATHARINES - Everyone needs some time with positive, friendly people who share a similar life experience. To laugh, listen to music, play a friendly card game or come together for conversation. Really, just ordinary things you’d do with a bunch of friends, while focusing on wellness.

This is Day Hospice, a weekly program offered virtually and in person for people living at home with a terminal illness.

Day Hospice has provided support for the Niagara community for 20 years, and on Wednesday, Oct. 20 we will be celebrating this milestone during a regular gathering with some fun activities mixed with the usual camaraderie, a nutritious packed lunch to take home and of course, cake!

The first Day Hospice gathering was held in fall 2001 at a local church and then relocated to The Stabler Centre on Ontario Street when it opened in 2007. In 2014, a second program began in Welland, offering bilingual support.

Living at home with a terminal illness can feel lonely and isolating, even with support from family and friends. Participants say one of the best things about Day Hospice is the opportunity to relax and forget about treatments, medical tests and illness.

“From the very beginning, the plan was to create space for people to enjoy the present moment as fellow travellers on a journey,” says Barb Nolan, Community Programs Coordinator. “We are celebrating this simple yet profound concept that continues to resonate and flourish 20 years later.

“Our gift to each other is to listen. To know that you matter and you belong here.”

Virtually or in person, the focus of Day Hospice is on sharing, companionship and connecting with others in a safe and supportive space. All our programs and services are offered at no cost to our Niagara community.
