Construction on Merritt Meadows Park set for this week

A playground is about to be installed on the corner of Eastman Gateway and Merritt Road; 'Finally something is happening'

Construction on the new Merritt Meadows Park on the corner of Eastman Gateway and Merritt Road is set to begin this week, as the park's playground is about to be installed.

“The works will include installation of the concrete walkaway, signage for park, bench installation and playground equipment installation,” read a statement from City Hall.

Local resident Barry Greer, who was out walking his dog near the site on Tuesday morning, told ThoroldToday the park has been a long time coming.

“I called the city for a couple years now,” he said. “Finally something is happening. I don’t think the city cares. No councillor lives in this area so we’re last."

Greer has been living for five years in the neighbourhood, situated on the boundary with Welland, and he said that there are many kids who live on his street who have been clamouring for a playground.

“I know a lot of children who want to use it before they’re 20,” Greer laughed.

A crew member from Stolk Construction Limited, the company contracted for the project, said that they’re hoping to put cement in on Thursday so that the playground can be installed.

The entire park once finished is set to cost the city $411,300, including a $10,000 staff inspection and project management fee.

Due to the construction, nearby residents should expect some disruptions and delays on Eastman Gateway.
