The city is exploring the launch of a tree giveaway and rain barrel sale program.

The City is exploring the feasibility of a tree giveaway and rain barrel sale program.

The proposal was launched by Councillor Ken Sentance during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

In his motion to city council, he said that "a tree giveaway and rain barrel sale program can contribute to the improvement of air quality, stormwater management, and overall environmental sustainability."

Councillor Sentance also shared that he could potentially see the city team up with the Knights of Columbus, to have the giveaway coincide with their annual Garden Fest.

“That’s how I see it but it’s up to you guys,” he told City Hall staff.

Other municipalities already have similar programs in place. St. Catharines has an annual tree giveaway and there’s a tulip giveaway hosted by the City of Welland every year.

City Hall will work together with the Environment, Climate Change, and Biodiversity Advisory Committee to prepare a report on the logistics of the proposal, which will be presented to council at a later date.
