From the equipment to the simulated patients in need of care, each aspect of Brock University’s new state-of-the-art Nursing Clinical Simulation Lab is set up to mirror a hospital unit.

The new facility, which enables students to gain valuable hands-on experience and further develop their skills as they prepare for clinical placements in health care, will officially open its doors next week.

A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held in the lab, located across Glenridge Avenue from the main campus in East Academic Building 3, on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.

The event will include a formal introduction to the space as well as guided tours and demonstrations of the lab’s simulation equipment led by undergraduate students, lab co-ordinators and faculty. The lab’s high-fidelity simulators represent patients from across the lifespan and from diverse populations.

For more than two decades, Brock University has been educating future health-care workers through its nationally recognized Nursing program. Last year, Brock Nursing experienced unprecedented growth, with its undergraduate program expanding even further through increased enrolment this September.

The new Nursing Clinical Simulation Lab was constructed to accommodate this rapid growth, joining two existing Nursing labs on campus.

“As the demand for nurses across the province continues to grow, Brock is responding by providing learning opportunities to future graduates who will be able to fulfil shortages in our hospitals and respond to the changing health needs of our communities,” says Faculty of Applied Health Sciences Dean Peter Tiidus. “The new Nursing Clinical Simulation Lab, with its cutting-edge technology, provides a safe learning environment for students to master both basic and life-saving skills that will allow them to have a profound impact as they begin their health-care careers.”
