Bridge-It’s back!

Bridge-It made its maiden voyage of the 2019 season in Port Robinson Saturday morning.

Port Robinson’s beloved ferry is back, and whisked the season’s first passengers across the foggy water Saturday morning.

Cameron Borisenko is happy to be aboard, piloting Bridge-It for his third year.

“I like it a lot,” said the Welland resident. “I’m saving up a few dollars before I travel all over the U.K.”

The ferry serves a valuable service by escorting Port Robinson residents—known as “regulars”—from east to west across the Welland Canal.

But bit by bit, Bridge-It is making a name for herself around the world, as it grows in popularity among the tourist population.

Last summer, Borisenko ferried a number of cyclists from overseas, he told ThoroldNews. “One girl came from Paris and was going all the way to Florida by bicycle and this was one of the places” along her journey.

Borisenko said cyclists can easily bring their bikes aboard Bridge-It, and find it ideal for bisecting the lengthy Niagara Circle Trek route.

“It’s a great job,” agreed Tony Dagostino. “That’s the best part. You meet so many people.”

The ferry has been outfitted with two new motors and will be getting a new canopy this year. It can accommodate push wheelchairs; but not motorized models.

Bridge-It will run from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on weekends only until Victoria Day, when services will be extended to seven days a week.
