The regional death toll associated with the COVID-19 pandemic increased after the weekend after a Niagara resident passed away after testing positive for the virus that to date has sickened close to 27,000 Niagara residents.

On Monday, the local health authorities reported another 406 cases in the region, in what is an underestimate of the true number of new infections.

Some new healthcare outbreaks were also noted after cases were found at Hotel Dieu-Shaver in St Catharines and Niagara Health Welland Hospital.

101 patients are currently in hospital care with COVID-19, of whom 62 are receiving care primarily for the virus.

19 are in intensive care. 9 of those patients are unvaccinated.
