NRPH now reports over 100 cases of COVID-19 variant in Niagara as two residents die after contracting virus

In its Friday update, Niagara's public health agency reported another 28 confirmed cases of the virus, as well as two more death in residents who tested positive.

There are now 240 confirmed active cases in the entire Niagara region.

Among the new cases, several unspecified variant cases were detected on screening, but are awaiting determination of what strain they stem from.

In total, 103 variant cases have been caught in sequencing, of which 4 have been confirmed as the British B.1.1.7-variant.

Three new outbreaks were also confirmed on Friday.

In total, there are 27 active outbreaks in the region, of which 4 are in health care settings.

Roughly 40 percent of the regions cases are associated with an outbreak.

Five COVID-19 patients are receiving care in hospital, according to Niagara Health.
