ThoroldNews recieved the following Letter to the Editor from Don Duval:

I wish to comment on our City of Thorold as being an example of how a small city can be a leader amongst much larger cities and in one of the most beautiful regions on the planet.

From a very small village, the progression to Thorold becoming a leader in business, education, natural habitats, politics and recreation has placed us at the top of the leader board. We may hit a bump in the road as do all others, however, we quickly move to not only remove the bump but make all related efforts to make us a better city.

Having been born and growing up in a small Eastern Ontario town, I can well relate how the ancestors of Thorold started small and never accepted any obstacle to derail the rise of our city to a leadership role in Canada.

Having moved to Thorold with my family in 1974, we lived on West Street North for a short time and then on Ormond Street for just over a year and our final move in August 1975 to Rose Avenue, where we still reside today.

The opportunities to gain employement surround our small city, which makes us a prime location for all families and in addition, we have educational facilities.

Brock University and Niagara College are in our backyard, and second to none.

When we think of natural habitats, we do not have to travel far. Again, we are in the middle of nature's gift to mankind with Mel Swart Park nearby; Beechwood, Decew and Morningstar Mills next door. Perhaps one of our greatest assests is the Welland Canal and the famous Thorold Locks where "Ships Climb the Mountain," to enjoy one of nature's most magnificiant settings.

Any city, to be successful, must have a hardworking team to steer our "ship" and continue to lead us to even greater success.  Over many years I have encountered and read stories of numerous city politicians all over Canada and other countries and I honestly must say that our city leaders stand at the top of the podium! To each and every one, I say a sincere "Thank you," on behalf on my family.

When we discuss recreation and sports, we are leaders in all areas with participation, organizations, coaches and parents stepping forward to ensure each and every young participant not only has an opportunity to enjoy sport[s] but has the added ingredient of being taught life skills. Our sporting facilities are second to none and maintained in excellent condition by our city staff.

I could continue here for some time on the fantastic advantages of being a Thorold citizen ........ but then Thoroldonians already know.

Thank you,

Don Duval
