The St. Catharines CYO Minor Hockey League will receive $25,000 and it needs your help to win even more.

It’s part of the Kruger Big Assist program which aims to improve access to hockey.

The manufacturer of paper products, including tissues, paper towels and toilet paper, recently announced five regional winners, each of which will get $25,000 to help subsidize enrollment fees for those in need:

  • Fernie Minor Hockey Association – Fernie, B.C.
  • Whitecourt Minor Hockey Association – Whitecourt, AB
  • St. Catharines CYO Minor Hockey League – St. Catharines, ON
  • Beaujeu Minor Hockey Association – Napierville, QC
  • TASA Minor Hockey Association – Upper Tantallon, N.S.

The company says the St. Catharines league is 100 per cent volunteer-based and has been providing youth programming to the Niagara region for 90 years.

“Through its 'Take A Shot' program, the league equips kids with new hockey gear and offers marginalized youth and new Canadians a fun and inclusive environment to learn hockey,” Kruger said on its website.

“The association aims to use Kruger Big Assist donation to continue expanding its current programming and is in the process of creating a new female coaching initiative.”

CYO Minor Hockey will now compete against the other four finalists for a grand prize of $75,000.

Canadians will cast votes online to decide the winner. It’s limited to one vote per person.

The voting window runs from 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 11.

The grand prize winner will be announced on April 16.
