Thorold Garden Fest helps grow community

This year's proceeds went to Wellspring Niagara, the Special Olympics and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank

The parking lot at the Holy Rosary Hall was bustling with activities all weekend.

The fourth annual Garden Fest presented, by the Knights of Columbus, on April 12,13 and 14 brought seasoned gardeners, plant-lovers and members of the community together.

Paul Carfagnini, deputy grand knight, told ThoroldToday that the proceeds from the event would be distributed to Wellspring Niagara, the Special Olympics and the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank. He said the Knights of Columbus had raised more than $9,500 thanks to Garden Fest proceeds.

In addition to the deals on lawn and garden products, there was also plenty of other activities at the three-day event, such as a barbecue on Saturday, a 50/50 draw, a bottle collection, and a food bank drive.

Carfagnini said non-perishable food items were being collected to support the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank in Thorold.

For Carfagnini, the motivation for the event was twofold.

“The purpose of the Knights, one of the pillars of our organization, is Catholic men in action to support charity,” he noted. “Secondly is patriotism and being involved in the community.”

He added that the event would no be possible without all the event sponsors and community groups involved.

“When everyone pitches in, we grow together,” said Carfagnini.
