'Beautiful snacks and spreads' at Mother's Day Tea in Port Robinson

On Saturday, different generations of women came together in Port Robinson to celebrate Mother's Day; 'Having an all-girls activity is very special'

On Saturday afternoon, Port Robinson's community hall was transformed into a tearoom to celebrate Mother's Day.

Marty Wilson, chair of the Port Robinson Community Centre's board, said there were more than 60 people registered for the tea, making it a sold-out event.

This was the second year the centre hosted the tea. In previous years, Port Robinson Proud used to host the event. In total, the event has been running for at least ten years, Wilson said.

She noted that there were local residents from Port Robinson, as well as women from St. Catharines and Niagara Falls.

Assorted tea sandwiches and desserts were served along with some charcuterie and plenty of delicious tea.

There were also door prizes and games played throughout the tea, which ran from 1 to 3 p.m. To make sure everyone could remember how much fun they had, there was also a photo backdrop, complete with a beautiful tea set.

Monica Bagnulo and her daughter Daniella were having the time of their lives.

“We love it!” Bagnulo told ThoroldToday. “There are beautiful snacks and spreads. Everybody is festive. It's great.”

Daniella said she enjoyed dressing up and liked “the fancy teacups.”

Sarah Gillen attended the tea, together with her mother Sally Quider.

“My family and I have been coming to events put on by the community centre for a few years and I thought it'd be a nice event to bring my mom to,” Gillen said. “It's lovely.”

Gillen said the appetizer was “very pretty,” and complimented the table settings.

Rachel Bernard was sat at a table with three generations of women. She was joined by her mom, sister, daughter and three nieces.

She said her daughter and nieces were having a great time pretending they were being fancy.

“I think it's fun – getting dressed up and having a special time with just the girls,” Bernard told ThoroldToday. “I have four sons in addition to my daughter so having an all-girls activity is very special.”

“This is the second year that we've come,” she added. “We just moved to Port Robinson, a year ago next month.”

Last year's Mother's Day Tea at the community centre was the very first activity the family participated in in Port Robinson.

“We wanted to get to know the town before we moved here,” Bernard said.

And the family has been coming back to the centre ever since.

“They do a fabulous job with everything they do and we've just really enjoyed being part of this community and being able to participate in the activities they do here,” said Bernard.

Next up on the calendar of Port Robinson Community Centre is the community-wide garage sale on June 8, and the centre will also be hosting their annual fundraiser in the fall.
